Row 1: Create a brim that is 13 st deep and roughly 16’’ wide. Connect the two edges of the brim with SL stitches. Section off the brim into four even sections using scrap pieces of yarn or st markers. Cut and tie off yarn. With next color place 1 DC in same st where you just cut off your yarn. Place 79 additional DC st around the edge of the brim, trying to get the stitches as evenly spaced as possible (80 total st at end of row).
Row 2: SL st into top of 1st DC, yarning over with next color. Then, place 1 FRONT POST st around 1st DC st, then 1 BACK POST st around 2nd DC st. Continue alternating between FRONT POST and BACK POST stitches for the entire row.
Row 3: SL st into top of 1st DC, yarning over with next color. Then, reverse the pattern, placing 1 BACK POST st in each of the previous row’s FRONT POST st, and 1 FRONT POST st in each of the previous row’s BACK POST stitches.
Rows 4 – 12: Repeat Row 3.
Row 13: *1 POST st in first 7 st, following same pattern of reversing st, 1 DCR POST st in next 3 st (yarn over, insert crochet hook around post (either front or back, reversing from the previous row), pull through the post, skip next st, insert crochet hook around following post, yarn over & drop 3 loops, yarn over & drop 2 loops)* Repeat * around the row (64 total st at end of row).
Row 14: *1 POST st in first 5 st, following same pattern of reversing st, 1 DCR POST st in next 3 st. * Repeat * around the row (48 total st at end of row).
Row 15: *1 POST st in first 3 st, following same pattern of reversing st, 1 DCR POST st in next 3 st. * Repeat * around the row (32 total st at end of row).
Row 16: *1 POST st in 1st st, following same pattern of reversing st, 1 DCR POST st in next 3 st. * Repeat * around the row (16 total st at end of row).
Rows 17 – 18: SC 2together.
