Checkered Beanie Crochet Pattern – Day 1 of 100:

Crochet Hook: F / 5 / 3.75MM
Yarn: 4 Medium ~ Big Twist Value brand
BRIM:
Row 1: CH 15, turn.
Row 2: 1 SL in BACK BUMP of all 15 chains, CH 1 (turning chain), turn.
Row 3: 1 SL in BACK LOOP ONLY of each st in row (15 total st).
Rows 4 – ?: Repeat Row 3 until brim fits around head (roughly 14’’ – 16’’).
Make sure last row ends on the opposite side as starting tail and that you’ve placed turning chain st, then stack the two edges together and place 1 SL through each of the 15 corresponding stitches, joining the two sides together.  When you get to last st, insert your crochet hook up underneath both stitches, but yarn over with next color (Color A of checkered portion), then CH 1.
MAIN:
Row 1: Place 80 SC around the edge of the brim.  Since there aren’t traditional stitches, place the SC stitches evenly in the available loops on the edge of the brim.  Every 8 st, alternate colors. To alternate colors, on your last st with Color A, insert crochet hook and yarn over as normal, but on 2nd yarn over of SC st, yarn over with Color B.   As you alternate, carry the previous color with you by crocheting over it.  Continue alternating every 8 SC until you reach the end of the row.
Row 2: On last st of previous row, make sure you alternate colors, then follow like colors around your row, placing 1 SC in each st, starting with CH 1 st from previous row.
Rows 3 – 6: Following continuous loop pattern, place 1 SC in each st in row, following the pattern of like colors as you alternate.
Row 7: Switching the checkered pattern, we are going to follow the same pattern, placing 1 SC in each st, alternating colors every 8 st.  To switch the checkered pattern, just continue with Color A in first 8 st, then switch.  This should reverse your checkered pattern.
Rows 8 – 12: Place 1 SC in each st in row following like colors as you alternate.
Row 13: Following like colors, place 1 SL in next 8 st.  There is no need to carry over other color.  In last SL, yarn over with color of the brim and then CH 1.  Place 1 SC in each st in row, until you get back to CH 1 of brim color.
Row 14: Make sure you skip the SL where you switched to the color of your brim, then place *1 SC in st 1 – 8, then SC 2together in st 9 & 10.* Repeat * around the row (72 total SC at end of row).
Row 15: *1 SC in st 1 – 7, then SC 2together in st 8 & 9.* Repeat * around the row (64 total SC at end of row).
Row 16: *1 SC in st 1 – 6, then SC 2together in st 7 & 8.* Repeat * around the row (56 total SC at end of row).
Row 17: *1 SC in st 1 – 5, then SC 2together in st 6 & 7.* Repeat * around the row (48 total SC at end of row).
Row 18: *1 SC in st 1 – 4, then SC 2together in st 5 & 6.* Repeat * around the row (40 total SC at end of row).
Row 19: *1 SC in st 1 – 3, then SC 2together in st 4 & 5.* Repeat * around the row (32 total SC at end of row).
Row 20: *1 SC in st 1 – 2, then SC 2together in st 3 & 4.* Repeat * around the row (24 total SC at end of row).
Row 21: *1 SC in st 1, then SC 2together in st 2 & 3.* Repeat * around the row (16 total SC at end of row).
Row 22: *SC 2together.* Repeat * around the row (8 total SC at end of row).
Row 23: *SC 2together.* Repeat * around the row (4 total SC at end of row).  Insert hook across small opening and place 1 SL.
Tie off yarn, secure all tails, and turn inside out.
