Crochet Vintage Headband Tutorial

How to crochet a headband? In this crochet tutorial, I show you how to crochet a simple and easy vintage headband that is beyond adorable. This pattern is quick, and makes a great last-minute DIY gift or wardrobe accessory. I love that this could also double as a vintage neck scarf in fall!

Crochet Vintage Tying Headband

Crochet Hook: G/6/4.25MM
Yarn: Lion Brand Yarn’s Re-up 100% Recycled Cotton and Polyester Blend (4 Medium)
Colors: Full Moon & Mineral Springs

*NOTE: the CH 1 at the end of each row is a turning chain stitch, so we will be skipping it when we start the following row every time.

Attach yarn to crochet hook using a slip knot.

Row 1: CH 2, turn.

Row 2: Working in the BACK BUMPS, place 2 SC in the 2nd BACK BUMP from the crochet hook.  CH 1, turn.

Row 3: Place 1 SC in st 1 and 2 SC in st 2.  CH 1, turn.

Row 4: Place 1 SC in each st in the row (3 total SC st). CH 1, turn.

Row 5: Place 1 SC in st 1, 2 SC in st 2, and 1 SC in st 3 (4 total SC st).  CH 1, turn.

Row 6: Place 1 SC in each st in the row (4 total SC st). CH 1, turn.

Row 7: Place 1 SC in st 1-2, 2 SC in st 3, and 1 SC in st 4 (5 total SC st).  CH 1, turn.

Row 8: Place 1 SC in each st in the row (5 total SC st). CH 1, turn.

Row 9: Place 1 SC in st 1-2, 2 SC in st 3, and 1 SC in st 4-5 (6 total SC st).  CH 1, turn.

Decrease:

Row 1: Place 1 SC in st 1 – 5, skip st 6, and then place 1 SC in st 7 – 12 (11 total SC st). CH 1, turn.

Row 2: Place 1 SC in each st in the row (11 total SC st). CH 1, turn.

Row 3: Place 1 SC in st 1 – 4, skip st 5, and then place 1 SC in st 6 – 11 (10 total SC st). CH 1, turn.

Row 4: Place 1 SC in each st in the row (10 total SC st). CH 1, turn.

Row 5: Place 1 SC in st 1 – 4, skip st 5, and then place 1 SC in st 6 – 10 (9 total SC st). CH 1, turn.

Row 24: Skip st 1 and place 1 SC in st 2 (1 total SC st).  On the last yarn over of the st, yarn over with the next color.  Cut the old color of yarn, tie the two tails together twice, then CH 1 and crochet over the tails for the next portion.

CH 1 and then place 1 SC in the available loops around the edge of the headband.  When you get back to the starting point, skip the CH 1 and SL st into 1st SC.  Hide tails along the seam where two colors meet.
