How to Crochet a Vintage Tiny Backpack

How to crochet a vintage tiny backpack? I have been noticing a serious comeback for tiny backpacks, and so I have decided to make a 90s themed small backpack out of cotton yarn.  This crochet backpack is surprisingly simple to make and shouldn’t take you more than a few hours to complete. This project also only takes two skeins of yarn, so for less than $7, you can make the entire vintage backpack.

This tiny backpack is a part of a two skein challenge, where I see how many projects I can complete with only two skeins of yarn. The entire playlist will be coming soon!

Note: this video has a precursor video, and that is my how to crochet a flat, SC circle.  See the tutorial here: https://youtu.be/m9baER2VfGc
Begin with the above precursor video and crochet 12 rows of your flat circle.  You should have 72 stitches in your last row.
Row 1: CH 1, place 1 SC in the BLO of each st in the row – including the current st where you placed the SL st (72 total SC st).
Row 2: CH 1, place 1 SC in each st in the row – including the current st where you placed the SL st (72 total SC st).
Row 3: Working in the front loops created in Row 1, skip 1 front loop, then place 1 TR in the next front loop.  Place 1 SC in the next 3 st at the top of the current row.  *Yarn over twice, then insert your crochet hook back in the same front loop that you just worked.  Yarn over and drop 2 loops at a time until 2 loops remain on your crochet hook, then skip 3 front loops, yarn over, insert your crochet hook in the 4th front loop. Yarn over and drop 2 loops, then yarn over and drop 3 loops.  Working back in the top portion of the st, place 1 SC in the three stitches that frame the current front loop (1 behind, 1 on top, and 1 beyond).* Repeat * around the row.  Join the last stitch of this row by yarning over twice, then insert your crochet hook back in the same front loop that you just worked.  Yarn over and drop 2 loops at a time until 2 loops remain on your crochet hook, then yarn over and insert your crochet hook under the 1st TR of this row, then yarn over and drop all the loops on your crochet hook.  SL st into the top of the 1st TR from this row.
Row 4:  CH 1, then place 1 SC in each st in the row (including the st where you placed the SL st).  SL st into the 1st SC st of this row.
Row 5: Repeat Row 4.
Row 6: Working in the stems of the peaks created in Row 3, *Yarn over twice, then insert your crochet hook under the two stems that form the 1st peak of this row (directly below your crochet hook).  Yarn over and drop 2 loops at a time until 2 loops remain on your crochet hook, then yarn over insert your crochet hook under the two stems of the next peak. Yarn over and drop 2 loops, then yarn over and drop 3 loops.  Working back in the top portion of the st, place 1 SC in the three stitches that frame the current peak (1 behind, 1 on top, and 1 beyond).  *Yarn over twice, working under the same stems of the peak that we just worked, yarn over and drop 2 loops at a time until 2 loops remain on your crochet hook.  Yarn over and insert your crochet hook under the two stems that form the next peak.  Yarn over and drop 2 loops, then yarn over and drop 3 loops.  Working in the top row, place 1 SC in the three stitches that frame the current peak (1 behind, 1 on top, and 1 beyond).* Repeat * Around the row.  To join the last st, follow the steps for the two peaks, but work in the last peak of the row and the 1st peak of the row.  The last 3 SC st should end at the top of the 1st peak.  SL st into the next st.
Rows 7 – 46: Repeat the last 3 rows until you have 14 intersections in your criss-cross pattern.
Row 47: Place 1 DC in the BLO of each st in the row.  CH 60 then pull crochet hook out of loop.  Cut yarn, but leave a tail of ~7” and weave the CH stitches between the DC stitches.  SL st into the 1st DC st after weaving CH stitches all the way around the row.  Cut and tie off yarn.

Flap:

Row 1: Attach yarn to crochet hook using a slip knot.  Working in the portion of the backpack that you want to be the back, place 1 SC in 30 of the FLO from Row 46 (these should be consecutive), the CH 1 and turn your work.
Row 2: Place 1 SC in each st in the row (30 total st). CH 1, turn.
Rows 3 – 14: Repeat Row 2.
Row 15: SC 2together in st 1 – 2, then place 1 SC in st 3 – 28.  SC 2together in st 29 & 30. CH 1, turn (28 total SC st).
Row 16: SC 2together in st 1 – 2, then place 1 SC in st 3 – 26.  SC 2together in st 27 & 28. CH 1, turn (26 total SC st).
Row 16: SC 2together in st 1 – 2, then place 1 SC in st 3 – 24.  SC 2together in st 25 & 26. CH 1, turn(24 total SC st).
Row 17: Row 16: SC 2together in st 1 – 2, then place 1 SC in st 3 – 10.  Place 1 DC in st 11, then CH 1 and skip st 12.  Place 1 DC in st 13, then place 1 SC in st 14 – 22  SC 2together in st 23 & 24. CH 1, turn.
Row 18: SC 2together in st 1 – 2, then place 1 SC in each st until you reach the CH 1 from the previous row.  In the gap of your hole, place 1 SC, then place 1 SC in the remaining st until you get to the last 2 stitches of the row, and we are going to SC those together.(20 total SC st).  CH 1, turn.
Row 19: SC 2together in st 1 – 2, then place 1 SC in st 3 – 18.  SC 2together in st 19 & 20. CH 1, turn (18 total SC st).
Row 20: SC 2together in st 1 – 2, then place 1 SC in st 3 – 16.  SC 2together in st 17 & 18. CH 1, turn (16 total SC st).
Row 21: SC 2together in st 1 – 2, then place 1 SC in st 3 – 14.  SC 2together in st 15 & 16. CH 1, turn (14 total SC st).
Row 22: SC 2together in st 1 – 2, then place 1 SC in st 3 – 12.  SC 2together in st 13 & 14. CH 1, turn (12 total SC st).
Row 23: SC 2together in st 1 – 2, then place 1 SC in st 3 – 10.  SC 2together in st 11 & 12. CH 1, turn (10 total SC st).
Cut and tie off yarn.

Straps:

Attach yarn to crochet hook using a slip knot.
Row 1: Working at the base of the back of the backpack, place 1 SC in 5 of the front loops left over from Row 1.  CH 1, turn.
Row 2: Place 1 SC in each st in the row (5 total st).  CH 1, turn.
Rows 3 – ?: Repeat until the strap reaches your desired length.  For me, that was 23.5 inches.  Secure the last row to the row where you flap joins by crocheting in the vertical loops at the joining.  Place 1 SC in the 5 corresponding stitches to join.
Repeat steps for the second strap.

Button:

Cinch up the CH stitches then fold the flap over your backpack.  Slide your crochet hook up under the criss-cross stitches that are directly aligned with the button hole and secure your button to the backpack there.  Slide button into button hole after cinching to secure.
